What are some of the specific conditions you treat?
Some of the specific conditions I deal with involve colon cancer screening, colon polyp/cancer surveillance, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and its complications including Barrett’s Esophagus, esophagitis; stomach/duodenal ulcer, gastritis, gastroparesis, H pylori infection, celiac disease, gluten sensitivity, SIBO, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis), liver disease including NAFLD/NASH, viral hepatitis, pancreatitis, pancreatic cysts, abnormal bile duct pathology, and the medical management of obesity.
What techniques or procedures do you use in your practice?
Some of the techniques and procedures that I use in my practice include upper endoscopy, colonoscopy with biopsy, polyp resection, or control of bleeding; flexible sigmoidoscopy with biopsy, small intestine evaluation with video capsule endoscopy, FibroScan, SIBO breath testing, esophageal pH monitoring, balloon dilation of strictures/rings/webs, endoscopic mucosal resection, push enteroscopy, variceal band ligation, H pylori breath testing, and feeding tube placement.
Describe some of your professional highlights.
I am board-certified in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Obesity Medicine. I served as both the Chief Internal Medicine Resident and Chief Gastroenterology Fellow at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. I have trained at a level 1 trauma and liver transplant center, and because of this, have been able to manage the most complex of gastrointestinal and liver conditions. Having worked in large multispecialty practices in New York over the last 7 years, I have been successful in helping patients address their gastrointestinal health while successfully navigating the complex healthcare system.
What would you like patients to know about your approach to care?
I understand that patients' gastrointestinal symptoms and concerns can be very sensitive topics. It is important that patients understand that no symptom is too small or silly to discuss with their gastroenterologist. I always say to "listen to what your body is trying to tell you... then relay that to me!" With that information, I take my time to understand where these symptoms may arise from. Together with the patient, I formulate a plan that we both can agree on.
What inspired you to become a doctor?
My earliest interactions with the medical field were as a child doing my homework in the corner booth at my parent's coffee shop (located within a hospital). Sitting back and watching the doctors come and go, listening to their interactions, and watching their fast-paced day-to-day routine appealed to me. This, coupled with my early interest in the sciences, led me down the path of considering medicine as a possible career path.

You could not meet a more kind and caring Dr. Dr.Protopapas listen to your words,He really hears you and show his concerns about your health.He will not ever rush a visit explaining his plan of care.
